2. We have some very
sad news for all of Horse
Haven. Our
beautiful little Pony GEM
passed away peacefully on
Thursday
24th June aged 23 years old. To us GEM was the
beast pony in the world.
To Horse Haven, she was the
founder member
pony. To Nicole, she was her perfect
partner, friend and member
of the family.
We will all miss her, chit
chat as she would
snicker and whinney to us every day. GEM
was always will to please
and she shared her expertise
with any children who
then developed a 'love' of horse riding

Welcome to Horse Haven's New
Instructor -
Rhoda McVey
BA
BETRL BHSAI (Regd) UKCC2
Hello to Everyone.
Have you thought of trying
BHS Trec, an exciting new
equine discipline that
promotes all-round
horsemanship. There are
three phases - orienteering,
control and obstacles.
This is suitable for any
rider and any horse
- whatever your level of
ability. We can practice
the control phase and the
obstacle phase in the arena
to give you a flavour of the
competition, and it won't be
long before you want to do
the orienteering too. In
the control phase, (called
the CoP) points are awarded
for a timed slow canter, and
a timed fast walk. The
obstacle phase (the PTV) is
like a cross country course
but it's not all jumping -
you might be asked to go
over, under, round or
through a variety of
obstacles, both on and off
your horse. Unlike show
jumping and eventing, if
there is an obstacle you
don't like, you can miss it
out, and not be eliminated
from the rest of the
competition. It's fun,
it's friendly and it's never
too late to start. Rhoda
is a BHS Trec specialist,
having won the British Trec
Level 2 Championship in
August 2009, but is a
qualified BHSAI/UKCC2
coach and is known for her
encouraging style.
Flatwork and jumping lessons
with Rhoda could also be
available at Horse Haven,
particularly for those who
wish to progress through BHS
Stage exams.
As time progresses we will
be making available more
specialised courses for
those wishing advancement.
Contact the Stable Manager
or the booking line for
more information on forth
coming courses. |

A cold snowy night for the
second annual Horse Haven
Riding School Awards and our
Show Jumping 2ft 6" (Clear
Round Timed Event) which
took place after the prizes
had been awarded.
In both Senior and Junior
Rider of the Year categories
it was a tie. We therefore
had to go back through the
complete year's nominations
from the instructor's
personal nominations and
tallying up their
nominations to see who
finally won the trophies -
well done to the winners
Cheryl Gilbert and Emma
Carson. Runners up were
Jane Meeney and Kathleen
Ennis.
The Stable Management Award
was won this year by Louise
Yau for the exceptional
skills of advancement to win
this section.
The Inter Schools Challenge
Shield was won by Cara James
from St Barbara's Primary
School. Well done for your
valiant win. On a point of
note; this is the 2nd year
running St Barbara's Primary
School has won this award.
Kiera Cameron from
Bargeddie Primary came a
very close second. Both of
these riders were the
fastest winners of the
heats.
Finally the Horse Haven
Advanced Horsemanship Award
was won by Nicole
Robinson who has advanced
herself tremendously this
year out competing and doing
well at these external
events, though also rising
to the challenge of winning
many internal events along
with training young stock
and remedial training for
ponies. The complete set of
nominations from all the
instructors for this award
sealed the deal.
A hearty well done to
everyone that achieved a
prize, it is a magnificent
achievement to win one of
these trophies.
The
Show Jumping 2ft 6" (Clear
Round Timed Event) was very
well attended and the fierce
competitiveness to gain the
fastest clear round time was
absolutely brilliant by all
the competitors involved.
The timed results are below
the pictures of the prize
winners. Well
done to all that took place
on the night. |

28th June 09 |
Welcome to Horse Haven's
New Instructor - Julie
Carscadden BHSAI
Hello to Everyone.
My name is Julie and
I'll be joining the Horse
Haven Team in July as an
instructor so I thought I'd
say 'hi' and introduce
myself.
I'm originally from Fife and
have been riding since I was
12 - a long time ago - but
in 1996 I moved down to
Gloucestershire where I
became much more serious
about my riding and bought
two horses, Tivvi and Be,
basing myself at a top
eventing yard where I
started to compete
successfully at both
eventing and BSJA show
jumping and also started to
complete my British Horse
Society exams.
In 2001, I moved to Saudi
Arabia, a big change, and
while there was asked
to instruct in a large
Equestrian Centre. This was
great fun, riding in the
desert is amazing, but most
importantly I met a lot of
people who were really
passionate about learning to
ride and improving their
horse knowledge and I
discovered that I loved
teaching so I continued to
learn myself and completed
the BHSAI exams in 2005.
Along side training for
the teaching exams I also
became a certified Equine
Body Worker (EBW), this
means that I am qualified to
give horses a sports therapy
massage. Sports massage can
help prevent injuries,
improves suppleness and
flexibility and assists with
post-competition recovery,
all the things we look for
to help our horses feel
better.
Currently, I am studying for
my BSc in Equine Science as
I believe that you never
stop learning new things
about horses and I'm looking
forward to meeting you all
at Horse Haven and helping
you to learn new things too.
Private (1 - 2 people,
individuals) and Group
Lessons with Julie are to be
booked as normal via the
booking line. Those
looking for help with their
horses and requiring Julies
expertise in EBW, please
contact the booking line
leaving a precise message
with the problem (including
a contact number) and an
arranged date and time will
be allocated to you.
